WHAT CAUSES ROSACEA?
Rosacea is a long-term inflammatory skin condition which results in increase blood flow to the small vessels of the face. The exact cause of Rosacea is not known, but we understand some factors that influence it’s occurrence.
IS IT EASY TO DIAGNOSE?
What else could cause redness in the cheeks?
Rosacea can be tricky to diagnose given that some of the symptoms are seen in other skin conditions. There are some reliable symptoms and signs which help to make the diagnosis, but specific tests are not usually undertaken. It’s also worth remembering that there are various sub-type of Rosacea, and it can present differently in different skin types.
Other conditions sometimes mistaken for Rosacea are:
-
Acne Vulgaris
-
Seborrhoeic Dermatitis
-
Keratosis Pilaris
-
Rubra Faceii
-
Perioral Dermatitis
-
Lupus
WHAT TREATMENTS CAN HELP WITH ROSACEA?
Medical assessment to confirm the diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan is crucial to getting good results from treatment of this condition. Medical management in the form of oral or topical (creams/ointments etc) medicines is often the first step to controlling this condition. It can take some weeks to see satisfactory improvements, and to establish a treatment that is tolerated.
MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK
-
Avoid triggers
-
Instigate medical treatment as appropriate ie oral/topical medication
-
Optimising skin care and UV protection
-
Physical/Laser therapies ie Sclerotherapy and Vascular Lasers
-
Maintenance therapy
Laser treatments to target the chronic blood vessels seen in Rosacea would be used to improve background redness which is often the most bothersome aspect of the condition. Treatments are carried out with either a vascular laser or Intensed Pulsed Light (IPL).
-
Larger vessels are ideally treatment with KTP 532nm laser using variable spot size to target the vessels appropriately and to reach an adequate depth.
-
IPL excels in treatment background redness with smaller vessel diameter which is too small to target with KTP Laser.
ADVICE AND THINGS TO AVOID
-
Sun
-
Triggers i.e. spicy foods, cheese, alcohol, steroid creams,
-
Use SPF – sunlight trigger veins to dilate
-
Green foundation – neutralises the redness

Expert Commentary
The crucial factor is to make an accurate diagnosis. To misdiagnose a patient with Rosacea and pursue a treatment plan when the diagnosis is incorrect can lead to wasted time and money with inadequate results. Equally, if you treat someone with Rosacea partially under the assumption it’s another condition can lead to delay control of the condition and a long term impact. Occasionally there is more than one condition present, and treatment must be tailored carefully for these circumstances.
